The use of honey as a healthy sweetener, beauty aid, antiseptic agent and curative item has become quite popular globally. In the UAE, the demand continues to rise with imported honey being valued at USD 34.30 million in 2017 from USD16.06 million in 2011, growing at a cumulative rate of 14% annually. The UAE government’s Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA) has put in place relevant regulations and standards to ensure the quality of honey products being sold in the country.
As a regulated product, honey should comply with either of the following certification of conformity:
EMIRATES QUALITY MARK (EQM)
EMIRATES CONFORMITY ASSESSMENT SCHEME (ECAS)
The types of honey required to have product certification include:
The provisions of UAE Cabinet Resolution No. 49 for the Year 2016-UAE Regulation to Control Honey shall apply to the product during all stages of the supply chain, and to all product offering methods, including the product packed in large packages or to be repacked in retail packages. The application of this Resolution excludes the product intended for use in food processing, as a component of processed food.
