The UAE federal entity Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA) has put in place relevant regulations and standards to ensure quality and safety of materials and products that come into contact with food. They should conform to a set of standards in order to ensure that chemicals used will not be transferred from the materials to the food, or any potential transfer will not raise safety issues.
As regulated products, they should comply with either of the following scheme or certification:
EMIRATES QUALITY MARK (EQM)
3 years validity
a mark of conformity granted to products that demonstrate compliance with the relevant UAE National Standards, Regional and/or International Standards; and are manufactured by an organization implementing an effective Quality Management System
EMIRATES CONFORMITY ASSESSMENT SCHEME (ECAS)
1 year validity
a product certification scheme for government-regulated products as mandated by the Federal Law 28 of 2001
Food contact materials with the following composition are required to have the product certification:
Plastic
Glass
Ceramic
Silicon
Paper
Metal
The regulation does not apply to:
Materials and articles which are supplied as antiques
Covering or coating materials which form part of the food (edible)
Fixed public or private water supply equipment
Secondary packaging materials that do not come into contact with food directly
Materials that are used in the production lines and sterilization materials
Materials intended for re-export
